One of Fundar’s main lines of action is the promotion
of human rights. Throughout its first three years of
history, Fundar always sought to embark on its different
projects incorporating a human rights perspective.
Given that Fundar’s work has concentrated on
studying social expenditure through budget analysis,
the main capacities developed in this area by our staff
have been related to economic and social rights, with
a particular emphasis on the right to health. At the
same time, Fundar’s staff gradually got involved
in projects related to civic and political rights when
it undertook the analysis of local governments’ performance,
the monitoring of public institutions involved in the
protections of human rights and the study on the impact
of Canadian mining in Mexico.
Thus, in January 2003, a new area
was added to the organization: Governance and Human
Rights, considering the accumulated experience on this
arena and the potential for developing new projects.
Projects in this Area explore –through research
and collaborative networking—creative alternatives
to influence key players and aspects of the democratization
process in Mexico, such as the Legislative power, the
public institutions involved in the protection of human
rights and the public security system.
