INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSION ON NATURAL RESOURCES, DEVELOPMENT AND DEMOCRACY IN LATIN AMERICA

International Seminar: Natural resources, development and democracy in Latin America (Lima, December 5TH through 6TH, 2007)

In early December, Fundar was invited to participate in an International Seminar summoned by Citizen Proposal, Oxfam International and Revenue Watch Institute and supported by the ECLAC and the Pope Catholic University in Lima, Peru. The purpose of the Seminar was to bring governmental actors together with representatives of the extractive industry and of organizations of the civil society to analyze the relation between extractive industries, development and democracy in the Latin American region and to build an agenda of public policies oriented towards making the most out of the resources which come from the extraction of natural resources for social benefit. Fundar participated with a paper in the panel dedicated to national networks of civil organizations in order to accompany and advise communities affected by extractive activities and monitor the public incomes originated from the exploitation of non-renewable natural resources.

On December 7th, after the Seminar, a meeting was held to analyze the possibilities of putting together a regional network of civil organizations which are dedicated to monitoring extractive industries. All the participants coincided on the fact that it is important to coordinate and exchange information, as well as to do research and training jointly, in order to impact national and international policies that regulate the extractive industry.
