CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS PROVE SOCIAL UTILITY OF INFORMATION ACCESS

On November 8 th , the third meeting of organizations committed to the empowerment of the right of information access was held in Mexico City. The event was organized by the Collective for Transparency and IFAI's Communities Project; two networks which together represent more than 36 civil society organizations throughout the country.

Organizations from Veracruz, Jalisco, State of Mexico, Sonora, Tabasco, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and the Federal District attended the event, which throughout the day covered four working panels. Given the plurality of the organizations' profile, the coverage of topics and the different use made of the right to information access, the information was significantly wide.

Some of the cases which were presented are: the use of environmental information in the defense of the territory and the protection of species in the case of La Parota; the access of imprisoned individuals to their own file; the access to public accounts of Coahuila; litigation as a tool to obtain more information; and the journalistic activity and information access, among others.

Fundar, Center for Analysis and Research, in its role as coordinator of the Collective for Transparency, actively participated in the event´s planning, as well as in the presentation of cases. The event was preceded by a breakfast sponsored by Article XIX, in which the work of the summoning networks was presented.
